Beautiful Scottish Beaches

The Highlands is home to some of the most beautiful Scottish beaches, with many of them found along the stunning eastern seaboard. Golden sand runs along the rugged coast with crashing waves and deep blue water that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Taking on a unique beauty in every season, we embrace the journey no matter the weather because when the tides far out and the sands beneath our toes, we know that we’re at home in the Highlands.

Dornoch Beach

Whilst Dornoch translates to ‘Pebbly place’ in Gaelic, we would argue that there’s more sand than stones these days. Wander down the path from the hotel, through the legendary links of Dornoch Golf Club to reach the beautiful golden shores of Dornoch.

Feel the sun on your face as you gently wander down the shoreline with the wind in your hair and the sand beneath your toes. Be on the lookout for local sea life, collect shells or be adventurous and try out a new water sport such as paddle boarding or kayaking. There’s also a children’s swing park nearby, as well as a takeaway coffee truck.

Embo Beach

Embrace the journey and carry on past Dornoch beach into Embo beach, another beautiful Scottish beach with translucent blue waters and soft golden sand. Featuring breath-taking views of the surrounding hills and plenty of rock pools for the kids to explore.

Brora Beach

Only a short 20-minute drive from Dornoch, Brora beach is a great place to spot local wildlife. Grey and common seals frequent the rocky shoreline and dolphins and minke whales can often be spotted out in the turquoise blue sea.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the sandy banks, or follow the shoreline all the way to Golspie for a beautiful and revitalising walk that bypasses Sputie Burn waterfall and the fairytale-inspired Dunrobin Castle.

Whilst you’re in Brora, stop by our sister hotel, the Royal Marine Hotel, for a delicious lunch made from fresh local produce.

Portmahomack Beach

Portmahomack Beach lies on the west side of this pretty seaside village and is a short 30-minute drive from Dornoch. A lovely visit in every season, this curved stretch of golden sand is sheltered from the brisk Scottish winds with views pointing back to Dornoch in the distance.

Take a gentle stroll along the beach and search for hidden creatures in the rock pools, before exploring the historic village of Portmahomack.
